Chef

A kitchen with a difference

Archerfield Walled Garden is one of East Lothian's most distinctive destinations, a beautiful, working walled garden with our Garden Café at its heart. We're not a high street coffee shop and we're not a hotel kitchen. We're something a bit different, and the team we're building reflects that.

Our café gets busy, particularly on weekends and through the school holidays. But unlike most hospitality roles, we operate during the day. Most shifts are daytime only, with no split shifts and no late nights. For a chef who wants to do great work without the antisocial hours that usually come with it, this is a genuinely rare opportunity.

The role

We're looking for a full-time Chef to join the kitchen team, primarily working weekend days as well as during the week. You'll be a key part of the kitchen during service — supporting the Head Chef, contributing to both sections, and being someone the team can rely on.

We're in the process of developing a new menu and kitchen structure, and the person we hire will be part of making that work. Whether you're looking to step up or consolidate your experience, there's real scope to grow with the kitchen.

We use quality ingredients, we care about presentation, and we take the food seriously. If you do too, you'll fit right in.

Day to day

  • Working confidently across both hot and cold sections during service

  • Supporting the Head Chef and Sous Chef throughout service

  • Plating and finishing dishes to a high standard

  • Keeping your section clean, organised and ready to go

  • Supporting junior team members and helping to develop those around you

  • Always following food safety and hygiene standards

What we’re looking for

  • Kitchen experience at any level — we're open to the right person and will pay accordingly

  • The ability to work at pace and contribute meaningfully during service

  • A strong understanding of food hygiene and kitchen safety

  • The ability to work at pace without cutting corners on quality

  • Reliability — weekends are our busiest days, and we need people we can count on

  • Someone who communicates well and supports those around them

  • A genuine passion for food and a desire to be part of a kitchen that's going somewhere

What we offer

  • Daytime shifts only including no split shifts, no late nights

  • A genuine walled garden setting — one of the most distinctive places to work in East Lothian

  • Guaranteed weekends off. Our rota gives every chef a minimum of 1 full weekend off per month

  • A kitchen with real ambition.

  • A supportive Head Chef and a close-knit team

Rate of Pay: Up to £15 per hour

Role Type: Full-time, Permanent

Working Days: 5 days a week, with weekend work part of the role and 1 weekend off per month

Benefits:

  • Discounted or free food

  • Employee discount

  • Free on-site parking

Café Supervisor

A team worth leading

Archerfield Walled Garden is one of East Lothian's most distinctive destinations. A family-owned business set within a beautiful working estate, our Garden Café draws customers from across East Lothian, Edinburgh and further.

The front of house team is close-knit and built on teamwork. Everyone works closely together – particularly on weekends when the café can be at capacity and the pace is full on. If you thrive in this kind of environment and want to be part of a team that genuinely cares about what they do, this could be the right place for you.

The role

As Café Supervisor, you'll work alongside our management team to keep the front of house operation running smoothly. On your shift, you'll be a key point of contact for the team, making sure customers are having a great experience, and any issues are dealt with calmly and confidently.

You'll work alternate weekends as part of a structured rota. Weekends are our busiest days — with inside and outside seating, a buzzer system for busy periods and a full kitchen operating at full capacity. It's fast, it's rewarding, and shifts are varied.

Day to day

  • Supervising and supporting the front of house team throughout your shift

  • Being a visible, positive presence on the floor, setting the tone for the rest of the team

  • Confidently managing your area. Whether that's the counter, the floor or the pass, with confidence and ownership

  • Supporting the training and onboarding of new team members

  • Keeping communication flowing between front of house and the kitchen

  • Making sure the café looks and feels its best throughout the shift

What we’re looking for

You need to be someone the team looks to when things get busy and someone the managers can trust to hold the shift together.

  • Experience supervising or leading a team in a café, restaurant or hospitality environment

  • A calm, confident approach when service gets busy

  • Strong communication skills, with customers, the kitchen, and your team

  • Someone who takes pride in the details — presentation, service, atmosphere

  • Reliable and committed. Alternate weekends are part of this role and consistency matters

  • A genuine interest in hospitality and in being part of a growing company

What we offer

  • A genuinely distinctive workplace — one of East Lothian's most beautiful settings

  • The opportunity to be part of a dynamic growing business

  • A supportive management team who wants you to succeed

Rate of Pay: Dependent on age and experience

Role Type: Full-time, Permanent

Hours & Shifts: 28–35 hours per week with a structured alternate weekend rota

Closing Date: Applications close at the end of July 2026

Benefits:

  • Discounted or free food

  • Employee discount

  • Free on-site parking
