Meet The Panel
Neil Davidson, Head Gardener at Greywalls Hotel
Neil has worked in horticulture all his life, in both the private sector, large private gardens (Bowerhouse, Belhaven House) and commercial and retail horticulture (Smeaton Nursery and Gardens). He is very experienced in arboriculture and woodland planting, a rarity in the modern horticultural field.
Neil studied Horticulture full time, has managed a nursery, both wholesale and retail, and has run his own gardening consultancy. He now works as Head Gardener at Greywalls, an elegant Scottish Edwardian country house and garden uniquely situated on the edge of Muirfield championship golf course. He is currently restoring the gardens back to their past glory. The delightful walled gardens are attributed to Gertrude Jekyll. They contain a hard and grass tennis court, croquet lawn and putting green as well as borders filled with herbaceous plants.
He is a founder member and President of the East Linton Flower Show and often judges shows throughout Scotland. He is also an award winning sweetpea show-er.
Rosemary Oberlander - Chair of North Berwick in Bloom (NBIB), RHS Britain in Bloom Champion award winner and Britain in Bloom Ambassador.
Rosie studied architecture and now works as an artist. She has a lifelong interest in gardening with one of her earliest memories being eating a tiny tomato in her great-grandfather's old wooden greenhouse. Rosie moved to North Berwick over 20 years ago and become involved with NBIB, first as a volunteer looking after flowerbeds, and latterly as Chair. NBIB have won numerous awards over the years including the Beautiful Scotland Rosebowl three times and three Britain in Bloom Gold Medals. In 2013 Rosie was awarded the RHS Britain in Bloom Champion award and she is also a Britain in Bloom Ambassador. When not winning things, Rosie has a real enthusiasm for getting children excited about gardening and getting their hands dirty.
Erica Randall, Head Gardener at Archerfield Walled Garden
Erica joined the team at Archerfield to help develop the beautiful walled garden. Her love of gardening began in 2000 after moving into her first home and having her own outside area. At the time she was working as a textile designer, but after enrolling in an evening class to study horticulture her hobby turned into something much bigger.
Since then Erica has successfully completed a HND in Horticulture with Plantsmanship and gained gardening experience from her own allotment right through to developing a kitchen garden from scratch. She is excited to be part of a new phase at Archerfield’s walled garden and looks forward to sharing the developments with everyone.
Hosted By Susie Coupar, The Lady Gardener
Last year, Susie set up East Lothian Seed, Cuttings, Plant Club on Facebook. This is a free seed, plant and cuttings exchange page for those throughout East Lothian who have an interest in growing their gardening knowledge through friendship, plant exchange and advice.
With 3 small children and a move to North Berwick, Susie has been able to revisit her love of gardening. She is currently undertaking a voluntary garden apprenticeship at Greywalls, writes a “gardening with children” feature on popular blog weeslice.com. She regularly uploads pictures and vlogs from her The_Lady_Gardener Instagram page. She is currently self-studying garden design and planting planning in her spare time with a hope to pursue academic qualifications once the children are a little older. Having designed several gardens from scratch and carried out all aspects of project management, she is pursuing her love of garden design having started her own EL garden design and planting planning business “The Lady Gardener”.
